The department involved in the ALPINE project is the Department of Information Engineering, one important site of advanced research and graduate studies in Electronics, Computer Science, Telecommunications and related fields. The Department is located in the “Scientific Campus” of the University of Parma where it occupies 4,000 m2 distributed in four buildings out of the thirteen assigned to the Engineering Departments. The Department supplies scientific and technical support to industries, firms and public bodies in Italy and abroad.
The research activity carried on by the group of Prof. Stefano Selleri is focused on two main fields. The first one is the study and the design of PCFs. Besides the numerous publications appeared on the most important journals of the field and the works presented during international conferences, the group has recently published a book “Photonic Crystal Fiber, Properties and Applications” edited by Springer, ISBN 978-1-4020-6325-1. The second important activity of the group is on fiber amplifiers and lasers. Recently the activity has been focused on fiber laser for S, C and L bands and for industrial applications. The group runs a lab with facilities and equipment for fiber based device analysis and characterization, and a numerical lab for the development of high performance simulators of fiber propagation, amplifiers and lasers.
In addition to R&D activities, the group of Prof. Stefano Selleri has been participating in numerous research programs, either domestic or EU-funded, within ACTS, IST and COST programmes. UNIPR has therefore the experience to be considered apt to ensure efficient project coordination.
Role in the project
Besides acting as project coordinator, UNIPR will be mainly involved in WP1 for the development and characterization of fiber laser prototype and in WP3 for the design of PCFs. In both activities UNIPR has gained valuable expertise and presents high performance lab and CAD facilities.

Prof. Stefano Selleri is the project Coordinator
He received the degree in Electronic Engineering with Laude from the Bologna University in 1991. From 1992 to 1995 he attended the PhD studies at the Information Engineering Department of the University of Parma. From 1997 he worked as a researcher at the same department where he became Associate Professor in March 2002. His research includes numerical methods for electromagnetic analysis of conventional and photonic crystal fibers, as well as integrated optics waveguides; fiber based amplifiers and lasers, and optical sensing. Prof. S. Selleri has been already involved in the FAST (ACTS Programme) and LOBSTER (IST Programme) projects and in the COST P11, COST 299 and COST MP0702 Actions.
She received the degree in Physics from the University of Parma in 1995. In 1999 she received the Ph.D. degree in Information Technology from the Information Engineering Department of the University of Parma. From February 2000 to December 2003 she worked as a post-Ph.D. grant holder and as contract researcher in the same Department. Since December 2003, she has been an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Parma. Her current research includes optical fiber amplifiers, fiber laser sources, photonic crystal fibers and numerical methods for electromagnetic field analysis.
